Which is better for a small server, Prometheus or a hosted uptime service?
What a hosted uptime check gives you
Hosted services check your site from outside your network and send an alert when it stops responding. They need almost no setup and do not use any resources on your server. This matters most when the server itself is what fails.
- Easy setup from a web dashboard
- Checks from outside your network
- Alerts by email or chat
What Prometheus gives you
Prometheus collects metrics such as CPU, memory, request counts, and custom application values. It also stores history so you can see trends over time. The tradeoff is that you run and maintain the server, storage, and alert rules yourself.
- Detailed metrics and history
- Flexible alert rules
- Runs on your own infrastructure
Choosing for your setup
If you mostly need to know whether the site is reachable, start with a hosted check. If you need to understand why a server slows down, add Prometheus with a node exporter. Keep the alert list short so you do not learn to ignore the messages.
Whichever route you choose, test an alert by stopping the service on purpose once. A notification you have never triggered may not work when you need it.
Common mistakes
- Installing a full metrics stack before setting up any uptime check.
- Creating dozens of alerts that fire constantly.
- Monitoring only the server without checking the app itself.
